It’s no surprise when a federal Liberal MP and a provincial Conservative MPP accuse each other of playing politics with funding announcements.
Or that both accusations have some sticking power.
But the depth of layering behind Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith and MP Maryam Monsef’s latest spat is more annoying than usual.
First, consider the background to Tuesday’s “announcement” by Smith and a pair of provincial cabinet ministers that Peterborough could get $26 million over the next decade for public transit upgrades.
Exactly the same money was announced a year ago, almost to the day. It will come from both the federal and provincial governments.
But back then, Liberal Jeff Leal was the local MPP. He and Monsef issued matching news releases on the same day. All was happiness and light between Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill.
